Industry 5.0: What are the Pillars of this New Industrial Era?

Indústria 5

Industrial evolution is driving significant changes in the way we live and work. Although many companies are still adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, the truth is that we are witnessing another transformation in the front row: Industry 5.0. This new era brings with it a new perspective on the future of production and the global economy.

Changes in industry are increasingly faster, due to the great and accelerating capacity for technological evolution. We are currently living in an era in which the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds are dissipating in the industrial sector. But what distinguishes the Fourth Industrial Revolution from Industry 5.0? That's what we're going to explain in this article!

Industry 5.0 is not just a linear continuation of Industry 4.0, but a holistic approach that aims to integrate advanced automation with human capabilities. While Industry 4.0 focuses on automation and digitalization to optimize efficiency and increase productivity, Industry 5.0 recognizes the irreplaceable importance of human intervention in the production process.

"This approach provides a vison of industry that aims beyond efficiency and productivity as the sole goals, and reinforces the role and the contribution of industry to society. It places the wellbeing of the worker at the centre of the production process and uses new technologies to provide prosperity beyond jobs and growth while respecting the production limits of the planet."

According to the European Commission

Industry 5.0 is based on 3 main pillars: A human-centered approach, Sustainability and social responsibility, and Resilience.

A human-centered approach

This is perhaps one of the main pillars of Industry 5.0. Rather than replacing human workers with machines, this new approach aims to integrate and reconcile the skills of both. Artificial intelligence and automation are seen as complements to human skills and abilities, such as creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Sustainability and Social Responsibility

Commitment to sustainability and social responsibility is fundamental in Industry 5.0. Data collection and analysis are key to achieving more sustainable production, both by optimizing production cycles and by controlling quality and reducing waste.

Companies are increasingly looking to reduce their environmental impact by adopting cleaner and more efficient production practices. Industry 5.0 also focuses on creating safe and inclusive working conditions, promoting equality in the workplace.

Resilience

Resilience and the ability to react flexibly and quickly to change is one of the fundamental principles of Industry 5.0. This involves the ability of companies to adapt and recover from changes, whether economic, environmental, or technological.

To do this, companies have to adopt strategies that increase their flexibility and agility, allowing them to respond quickly to changes in market conditions or unexpected events.

Integrating these approaches into company operations will prove fundamental, not only for companies to achieve success in the short term, but also to build a more sustainable and inclusive future for all. As we move closer to Industry 5.0, it is crucial to recognize the fundamental pillars that drive this new industrial era.
